Lincoln's Dilemma offers a fresh perspective on one of the most consequential presidencies in American history. Drawing on historian David S. Reynolds' Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Times, the four-part documentary explores Lincoln's evolving views on slavery, race, and democracy through the voices of leading historians, educators, journalists, and rare archival materials. Rather than presenting Lincoln as either hero or villain, the series reveals a complex political leader navigating profound moral, constitutional, and military challenges during the Civil War.

At the heart of the series are the stories of enslaved people, Black abolitionists, soldiers, and activists whose actions transformed the course of the war and the nation's future. Together, their voices paint a richer, more complete portrait of emancipation—one that reexamines Lincoln's legacy while illuminating the collective struggle to preserve the Union and abolish slavery.

The series, set against the backdrop of the Civil War, shows how that fight for emancipation was much larger than one lionized man.
